January Birthstone: Garnet
January is the month of the garnet gemstone. The name derives from the Latin name “granatus,” meaning “seed-like,” in reference to a pomegranate. It is most commonly found in a beautiful deep scarlet color, much like the seeds found inside of a pomegranate.
For centuries, the garnet gemstone has symbolized love and eternity. It was a popular decorative piece for nobles and was also thought to protect against bad dreams. According to legend, Noah used a finely cut garnet to illuminate the ark during his long and arduous journey.
Though most commonly associated with the deep red color, the garnet also comes in a range of colors, including purple, green, yellow, pink, and orange. Also uncommonly known to some, this gem is given as a gift for the second wedding anniversary. The garnet is a beautiful and bold stone, representing love and affection.
