Most people know about Aquamarine as being the birthstone of March, but did you know that Bloodstone is another birthstone of March? It is and since we are just a few days away from the official first day of Spring, we thought we would talk about the gemstone Bloodstone, since it has that nice dark green tone and reminds us of all the beautiful trees during the spring/summer.
Bloodstone is a gemstone found in India, Brazil and Australia embedded in rocks or riverbeds and is part of the Chalcedony variety. It's a dark-green stone with vivid red spots of iron oxide. This stone is referred by a couple of different names. The first is the name heliotrope, which is in reference to the Greek meaning "to turn to the sun". Another name for Bloodstone is Blood Jasper; which tends to be the more transparent shade of Bloodstone gem.
There are a few beliefs behind this stone. Ancient Egyptians believed wearing the stone increased their strength and made them invisible. While Medieval legend believes it was created when drops of Christ's blood fell on the ground. Some other beliefs include:
- Believed to have healing powers; especially for blood disorders
- It could control or change weather
- Win legal battles
- Give the gift of prophecy
This stone is used, most often now days, as a lucky charm, help with mental clarity, increase creativity, and boost overall energy. Whether all of these beliefs work or not is unknown but if it helps while wearing the stone; then why not. Get yourself a Bloodstone and see if it does indeed boost your energy or creativity.
